the cog has nine gears the chain skips in all but one what is the point anyway
i commute to work on a geared bike. ok throw the tomatoes, bring out the hook, black list me. i do it because... (i'm now sitting here trying to think what my next statement should be)... i do it because it's easier. i think i have a damn hard ride into work. about 12 miles, around 800' of climbing morning and evening, lots of lights and fenders and panniers, the bike weighs over 40lbs. hard, i say.
but i crashed and broke my fork this summer and rode my SS cross bike in for about a month. threw on the rack and some lights. went slower, but i did it. it must have been hard getting up that last climb right before work, but ya know... i don't even remember that now. every day, for a month.
i replaced the chain on my regular geared commuter. it had been too long and now the new chain is not happy with the old cog. only one rarely used gear is useful under any kind of torque. not really my kind of singlespeed.
if you're going to commute to work by bicycle you need to be highly visible (if you're going to be close to any cars), you need fenders (unless you're a pussy and only ride when the weather is fair... and when people aren't watering their lawns), you need some decent tire clearance (to accept those fenders and tackle potholes), but you don't need gears. SS cross type road bikes and mtn type bikes make great commuters. i don't have a pic of mine set up as a commuter but here is an excellent example by the illustrious mr brown. and another. there are more. "what!!!" you say. "i'm cool! i hang out at singlephile.net. that bike is ugly and has biopace chainrings." don't worry. different is cool. sheldon is cool.
skipping gears are not cool.

"the urge to ride a ss comes from within your soul, it beckons you, it haunts you, it fills your sleep and it controls your days. if you don't have it - don't worry about it. just live your life with gears and let others live theirs without. han solo didn't try to become a jedi because he didn't have the urge. but, he did just fine without it. or, is that fiction??" - ga-ss
